Types of New Dangerous Mosquito Species Found in California
There are three different mosquitoes that are newly found in the state of California. Here is a little more information about each of these mosquito species.
– Asian Tiger Mosquito: The mosquito was first seen in the Los Angeles Valley in 2011. It is responsible for carrying dengue, Zika, West Nile, Lacrosse and Yellow Fever. This is a black mosquito with a white stripe behind the head and banded legs.
– Yellow Fever Mosquito: This mosquito has white marks on its back and was first spotted in California in 2013. It is now found in 8 different counties throughout the state. It is most known for carrying Yellow fever, but can also transmit dengue, chikungunya and Zika as well.
– Australian Backyard Mosquito: You can find white stripes on this mosquito as well and it was first found in CA in 2014. It is responsible for transmitting Murray Valley Encephalitis to humans and can transmit dog heartworm to your pets as well.
Mosquito Appearance & Identification
All of these mosquitoes have white stripes on them. They all measure about ΒΌ inch long and are dark in color. Some things that make these mosquitoes stand out is the way they lay their eggs. They lay them in water, but when the water dries up, the eggs still have the ability to hatch once they make contact with water again. The eggs look like small black seeds or specks.
How to Prevent Mosquito Bites
The key to keeping these mosquitoes from taking over your property and our state is doing our part. If there are any items in your yard that are collecting water, they need to be dumped. This is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes of all varieties. Even something as small as a saucer can be enough water to lay their eggs. You should always wear insect repellent during dusk and dawn which happen to be the most active times for mosquitoes. It is important to remember that these dangerous species are extremely active during the day as well; which sets them apart from other species. They look different enough from other mosquitoes that most people can easily identify them when they come in contact with them.
