Animal Pest Management Services, Inc are the experts when it comes to rodent control in your Southern California home and business including mice. The most common species of mice found in our state is the House Mouse but Deer Mice are also found (mainly) in underdeveloped areas as well.
House Mice, (Mus musculus)
The adult house mouse weighs 1 ½ ounces and can grow up to 7 inches in length. They are light brown to gray in color with a lighter underbelly. During the cooler months, the house mouse will move inside homes searching for warmth. In many cases, the first indication of their presence is the accumulation of shavings and other debris. House mice can cause structural damage to homes and apartments as well as offices and other commercial properties through gnawing, nest building and defecation. Harmful bacteria and diseases that house mice can transmit include salmonella and Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM)
Deer Mice (Peromyscus maniculatus)
Deer mice range in size from 3 to 4 inches in length and are light brownish red in color with a white underbelly and feet. They will enter domestic spaces searching for food and once inside they look for secluded spaces including the attic, basement or crawl space to build nests. Deer mice carry several serious diseases including Hantavirus. Fortunately, for most Californians, the risk of contracting Hantavirus is extremely low for two main reasons. Not all deer mice carry hantavirus and fortunetely deer mice are found mostly in underdeveloped areas around the state rather than populated urban areas.
