The knowledgeable professionals at Animal Pest Management Services, Inc are the experts when it comes to rodent control in your Southern California home and business including rats. Two species of rats are commonly found in our state; the roof rat and the Norway rat.
Roof Rats (Rattus rattus)
The roof rat, also commonly referred to as the black rat, ship rat and house rat is dark brown to black in color and measures approximately 13 to 18 inches in length. The roof rat prefers to nest outside in trees but will enter homes during the cooling months, typically nesting in attic or ceiling areas. Norway rats can cause damage to structures and carry dangerous diseases which can be transmitted to humans through food contaminated with urine or feces, as well as the result of biting people. Norway rats can also carry ticks, mites and lice that can transmit bacteria and illness.
Norway Rat, (Rattus norvegicus)
The Norway rat is also commonly referred to as the brown rat, gray rat, common rat, house rat, wharf rat, water rat, barn rat and sewer rat. The Norway rat is grayish brown in color, and measures approximately 7 to 10 inches in length. The Norway rat is nocturnal and will enter homes when food sources become hard to find. Once the rats enter your property they will nest in secluded areas. Norway rats can cause damage to structures and are vectors for many diseases including plague, rat bite fever, trichinosis and salmonellosis.
